The Brisbane-Moreton Bay Region is an important coastal region of international significance, hosting fishing, aquaculture, port services and tourism activities as well as recreation. It provides for fishing, aquaculture and port services while tourism provides for recreation on islands, sandbanks and marine areas that support an abundance of wildlife, habitats and seascapes visited annually by more people than visit Great Barrier Reef itself. Furthermore, The Bay is considered an invaluable cultural resource in Queensland.
The Bay is home to both environmentally and internationally significant species, habitats, seascapes and landscapes of global significance. Its waters offer recreational, commercial and environmental benefits; six of the seven sea turtle species inhabiting its waters have substantial foraging populations that contribute annually to genetic stocks in southern Great Barrier Reef and South Pacific Ocean waters – green turtles and hawksbill turtles being among them. Furthermore, The Bay serves as an important breeding area for Australia’s critically endangered loggerhead turtle.
Its wetlands, mangrove forests and intertidal mudflats support an extraordinary range of subtropical and temperate marine plant species as well as numerous migrating shorebird species, while over 40 bird species use its intertidal habitats – some listed under international migration agreements! Due to its unique location, climate and topography as well as marine and terrestrial habitat diversity the Bay boasts an exceptional biodiversity.
Moreton Bay and its islands were historically home to the Quandamooka people, whose traditional land and sea law was founded upon deep respect for their environment. Moreton Bay provided food, shelter and materials – as well as livelihood opportunities – for these native Australians who called Moreton home. By 1820s Moreton Bay became an arena for European colonisation with Redcliffe being settled as the initial settlement site in 1823; since then the Port of Brisbane has coordinated shipping traffic along its northern section while providing fertile waters which boast abundant fisheries.
